Flowchart: Turning Your Topic into a Question | Preliminary Literature Review
This is the third in a series of flowcharts that I am developing to walk students through the earliest stages of the writing process -- from finding a topic to creating a research question. The first flowchart, How to Find a Research Topic, and the second Flowchart, Interrogating Your Topic, did not require students to do any formal research in the secondary literature. This third flowchart focuses on introducing them to the basics of discovering the relevant research literature through online databases and using literature reviews (both in the form of formal essays and in introductions to books and articles) to further interrogate their research question. By the end of this exercise, students should be able to express how their research question relates to the current debates in their discipline.
