Another Successful #DataRescueIndy Event Yesterday
Yesterday was another exciting day for #DataRefugeIndy. We hosted our second #DataRescueIndy event with about 20 people here in Indianapolis. We were joined by a small group of fellows from the Santa Fe Art Institute. Streaming the meeting via Skype, we tackled the "seeding and sorting" of the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Air and Radiation website. Not only did attendees learn about the mission and research of this EPA office, but they learned about the challenges of maintaining and protecting digital data. In a short wrap-up discussion at the end of the session, several participants noted how much they had discovered over the course of the day. And, they noted how how impressed they were with the international networks created by #DataRefuge and its partners. Everybody agreed that while we were playing a small part in a larger project, the experience made us feel much more connected to a larger international community of scientists, scholars, and concerned citizens.

#DataRefugeIndy (part of the #DataRefuge consortium based at the University of Pennsylvania) recognizes that evidence for ongoing human-induced climate and environmental change is overwhelmingly supported by the scientific community and backed by decades of data-driven analysis. Much of this analysis has relied on the important climate and environmental data sets stored on federal servers. Continued reliable access to these data sets is vital to ongoing climate and environmental research. However, there is no guarantee that this federal data will remainaccessible to researchers and the public into the future.
We need your help in capturing, coding, and uploading federal data sets to servers that can guarantee continued access to researchers and the public into the future.
We will be holding events throughout 2017 . To participate, you don't need to have any technical skills. We'll teach you everything you need to know. But, if you are a coder, please be in touch. We are working with a national network that needs your expertise. #DataRescueIndy events are free and open to the public.
About #DataRefuge
#DataRefuge is a consortium based at the University of Pennsylvania. They work with partner sites to generate awareness about and accessibility to federal climate and environmental data.
The mission of #DataRefuge is to identify, assess, prioritize, secure, and distribute reliable copies of federal climate and environmental data. Data collected as part of the #DataRefuge initiative will be stored in multiple, trusted locations to ensure continued accessibility. As part of the overall project, #DataRefuge is developing best methods, practices, and protocols for metadata, accessibility, and storage.
#DataRefuge depends on local communities and works in partnership with the Environmental Data Governance Initiative (EDGI), Climate Mirror, ProjectARCC, and with local collaborators at #ProtectClimateData and other #DataRescue events.
